Flood Protection

Dangers of Flooding

flood damage

The major flooding that devastated towns and villages across Britain in October 2000 has led to the fear that this may become a more frequent event in future.
If you live in a house or work in a commercial property which has been affected, you will know first hand the full horrors of the event and the subsequent effects on such things as insurance and resale value.

flood damage

A product has now been introduced in the UK that was unavailable then. It is a waterproof, expanding polyurethane foam called Foamseal which, used in conjunction with material such as plywood, will help to keep the floodwaters from entering your property.

By storing a Foamseal 200 pack along with other flood defence materials (pre-cut boards, tape, etc.) in any building at risk of flooding, you will be ready for next time.

Foamseal packs have an un-opened shelf life of 2 years.

How To Use Flood Protection

building insulation
1. Identify all areas which might allow flood water to enter the house, ie. doors, windows, air vents, etc. Plan in advance how these areas can best be sealed, paying particular attention to past water levels and the continuing usage of doors, etc.

2. Cut to shape an inner frame of (say) 2 x 1 inch timber and screw to wall using rawl plugs. Buy a roll of tape which will cover vents to stop foam from penetrating.

3. Cut plywood to extend 3 or 4 inches beyond frame on all four sides. Pre-drill screw holes into inner frame and assemble to ensure fit. Mark each board so you can easily identify their location at a later date, and store with tape and Foamseal in a dry place.

4. When there is a flood threat, assemble frames and boards, spraying Foamseal into the cavity between the inner frame and the board edge from both sides to form a watertight seal. IDEALLY SURFACES SHOULD BE DRY BEFORE APPLICATION.

5. Tape over air vents and seal with a layer of Foamseal, extending at least 3 inches beyond the vent. When dismantling, remove traces of Foamseal from masonry with a wire brush.
